Melbourne based innovation company, Sleeptite, has been named one of four finalists in the inaugural InnovationAus 2021 Awards for Excellence in the category of MedTech and BioTechnology for the development of REMi®.

Designed to celebrate the very best of Australian innovation, the InnovationAus Awards puts a spotlight on the companies and people that are building new, innovative products and services that will deliver commercial success or outstanding social impact.

In addition to the MedTech and BioTechnology category Sleeptite has also been named as a finalist in the People’s Choice Award, which is voted on by members of the public to determine the most outstanding Australian innovation of the year.

Sleeptite is the only company in the InnovationAus 2021 Awards for Excellence innovating in the aged care sector – a sector that is living in the wake of a Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety.

REMi® is a world-first “nearable” innovation that continuously monitors the presence, position, and posture of an aged care resident throughout the course of every night, in order to assist the valuable care workforce with fall prevention, pressure sore management, and night-time monitoring. The REMi system will provide nurses and carers with the necessary tools to ensure that greater quality of care is provided at all times and that residents only receive night-time disruptions and interventions when necessary.

“Looking at the calibre of the InnovationAus 2021 Awards for Excellence advisors and judges, it’s a humbling experience to think that a little company like Sleeptite would be worthy of being named a finalist in a category as inspiring as MedTech & Biotechnology,” Sleeptite CEO Cameron van den Dungen said.

“When we started the Sleeptite journey our focus was on working directly with the aged care workforce to deliver a tool that they actually wanted and needed. What we quickly came to realise was that the challenges faced in Australia were identical to those faced by the aged care sector globally. This has meant that at each stage of development we have been building REMi with the knowledge that it needed to be both cost effective and quickly scalable from the outset,” he continued.

“Being named as a finalist in these prestigious awards is a testament to the hard work, determination and dedication of every person that has worked on REMi throughout the years. From our collaboration partners at RMIT University and Sleepeezee Bedding Australia, right through to the Australian Federal Government who supported us with a Cooperative Research Centres Project Grant,” he finished.

The MedTech and BioTechnology category is sponsored by the Digital Health Cooperative Research Centre (CRC).

“Australia’s entrepreneurial scene is one of the most vibrant ones worldwide, having produced 20 tech unicorns last year following a second-to-none funding and investment surge,” Digital Health CRC chief innovation officer Dr Stefan Harrer said.

“The InnovationAus Awards for Excellence will highlight some of the most stunning stories of translating innovation into real-world impact, and we’re thrilled to be shining a light on the prolific innovators behind these successes,” Dr Harer continued.

All awards and winners will be announced at a gala black-tie dinner held on Wednesday, December 1.
